MDR Colloquium June

Dear scientist,

The next MDR colloquium will be held on Monday June 10 at 4:00 pm (CET), online via TEAMS. We welcome all scientists from the MDR-affiliated institutes (MERLN, ICMS, RMU).

In this session, we are hosting a special speaker:

Sebastien Callens, PhD Imperial College London

The Curious Case of Curvature:Geometric Perspectives on Tissue Organisation

Sebastien Callens is currently a UKRI Postdoctoral Research Fellow (MSCA) in the Department of Materials, working in the group of Prof. Molly Stevens. His work centres around studying and leveraging cell-material interactions for tissue engineering applications. He was previously a Rubicon Research Fellow (NWO, The Netherlands) in the same group, working primarily on bone tissue engineering.

Prior to joining Imperial College London in April 2021, he completed his PhD (cum laude) in Biomaterials and Tissue Biomechanics at TU Delft in the Netherlands, under supervision of Prof. Amir A. Zadpoor. His PhD work focussed on bone tissue engineering, covering topics such as cell-geometry interactions, parametric scaffold design, and origami-based biomaterial fabrication. Sebastien also holds a BSc and MSc in Aerospace Engineering from TU Delft.

Sebastien has a multidisciplinary computational and experimental engineering background, which spans areas such as high-resolution fabrication and imaging, cell culture, finite element analysis, applied geometry, and quantitative image processing. His research interests include tissue engineering, biomaterials design, biomechanics, mechanobiology, and biofabrication.
