Interview MDR Postdoc: Milica Nikolic

Who are you, what is your background and how did you get involved in MDR?

My name is Milica Nikolic. I am from Serbia. There I finished elementary school, gymnasium and faculty (Mechanical faculty Kragujevac, University of Kragujevac). I finished my PhD studies at Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac, obtaining the title Doctor of Science – Mechanical Engineering. I am working for the last ten years in bioengineering area, covering the computational modeling for different applications. I applied for postdoc position at TU/e, at Department of Biomedical Engineering and that is how I got involved in MDR.

Tell us a little bit more about the research you are planning to do within MDR.

Regenerative medicine is the area which I tackled a little bit during my work, but I would like to be more involved in this developing area. A lot of things from MDR program appear to be very interesting to me. I am planning to start with development of computational models of kidney and later I will probably enroll myself in cardiovascular area. I will participate in development of enabling technologies platform as well.

Who is your biggest example in science and why?

When I think about science and research, I can find a great joy in learning new things and pleasure of accomplishing the projected goals followed by certain discovery. There are many scientists that are for admire, but for me there are two persons distinguished, unusual and unique – Nikola Tesla and Leonardo da Vinci (although he was not quite a scientist by vocation). They are special to me because of their impeccable vision of the future and discoveries that were way out of their time. To be able to see such a broad picture of the future is invaluable in my opinion. That is why they can be an inspiration to the many next generations.

What do you do in your free time and how can we recognize the typical Milica?

I spend the most of my free time with my kids. We like to be outside and I enjoy learning them new things. Besides that, I like to spend time with my family and friends, hang out with the people. I love to read and watch a movie from time to time with my husband. My whole family likes travelling. We consider traveling as a chance to be together, see new places and meet new people and their customs. Everything that is treasured in mind and not in space is my priority.
